Small Parts Magazines, 2021

This work consists of macro shots of the content of my two small parts magazines. The individual parts of the content were cut out and divided into foreground, middle and background according to the spatial arrangement. The handle of the drawer, which has not been photographed, was recreated from plexiglass, which means that the glazing of the photo also becomes part of the relief. Since this is a motif that invites the viewer to get closer to the picture, the drawers have been photographed individually so that each drawer has its own vanishing point.

Lighting with soft light from above is unnatural, as the contents of small parts magazines are not normally illuminated as in a display case. This type of lighting was however deliberately chosen in order to bring about an
appreciation of the profane. Since these small parts magazines can be found in workshops, in small businesses or in private hobby rooms, this artistic work can therefore also be understood as an appreciation of the craft and the working class.

Due to the necessity of a numbering system (both during the photography and in the subsequent production process), each drawer was assigned a consecutive number. Although this is only a snapshot of a constantly changing collection of small parts, this work also evokes questions about the collection management.

Many thanks to Jürgen Steineder for his helpful advice.
