During the course of my study trip to Istanbul with the seminar group of
Simon Wachsmuth, this site-specific work was created. It consists of the stool
of a shoe shiner and a matching base. The sidewalls of the stool made of
adhesive tape allow the shoe shine kit to be stored inside the stool. I wanted
to use this particular stool as an artistic work for our exhibition in
Istanbul, so I bought a new stool in the same design and
offered it to the shoe shiner in exchange.
After paying a little extra, I was
finally able to borrow his stool for the duration of the exhibition. The
pedestal was cut from a piece of packing cardboard, taped, and painted white.
The drawn spirals on the sides of the pedestal are demonstration copies of a
spirograph street vendor.
Many thanks to the shoe shiner from Istanbul for the loan of his stool.
