Matthias Kendler, born in 1985 in St. Pölten, works at the Albertina in Collection Management and as a visual artist in Vienna. His artistic practice focuses on minimalist kinetic works made of metal, wood, acrylic glass, PLA, and electronics. He uses manufacturing techniques such as CNC milling, laser cutting, engraving, 3D printing, as well as anodizing and powder coating. However, closer inspection reveals a deliberate visibility of the handmade and a precise painterly design.

A transparent acrylic glass plate serves as an image carrier for twelve spring steel hands and falling leaves made of dark blue powder-coated aluminum. The hands are moved with the help of 3D printed gears, which are driven by an electric motor at a speed of 0.5 revolutions per minute. The color tones were inspired by the color palette of old stationary drills, among other things.

The title “Drive Theory” refers on the one hand to the fact that another drive technology was chosen for the technical realization of this work in the “T+1×n” series. In contrast to the use of a chain or toothed belt, in this variant the power is transmitted directly from one gear wheel to the next. The only exceptions are the gear wheels on the sides, as the right-hand gear wheel is driven by the electric motor and the left-hand gear wheel is probably driven by both the upper and lower gear wheel. In addition, the left-hand gear wheel is technically redundant, but was added for aesthetic reasons.

On the other hand, the title refers to Sigmund Freud's drive theory, according to which humans are determined by drives and basic needs. Of course it would be too simplistic to try to explain the human psyche with a machine. Nevertheless, the falling leaves could be seen as a metaphor for drive goals. The bending of the spring steel hand could therefore be interpreted as an attempt to achieve the drive goal, or also as an expression of the postponement or suppression of the drive. After the falling leaf has finally fallen and the drive goal has been reached, the impulse to satisfy the next drive follows.

A transparent acrylic glass plate serves as an image carrier for twelve semi-transparent gray dial disks with spring steel hands and falling leaves made of patinated bronze. The hands are moved by means of toothed pulleys and a toothed belt, which are driven by an electric motor at a speed of 0.5 revolutions per minute.

The color of the green back wall was inspired by the paintwork of old metalworking machines. The mechanics by means of toothed belts refer to the functioning of 3D printers, which, like metalworking, were part of the production process for this work. Ten needle bearings would have been sufficient to prevent the toothed belt from slipping; however, 19 were used for aesthetic reasons.

The title „Time Recording System“ refers on the one hand to the fact that this work only appears to be about clocks. This is because there is only a (slowed down) second hand and no minute or hour hands. Secondly, the title refers to time recording systems (e.g. using time cards or a chip) that record the working hours of employees. The constantly repeating countdown or deadline therefore also illustrates the everyday routine of working life. The delay caused by the bending of the spring steel hand is also reminiscent of the aspect of procrastination. Many thanks to Jakob Scheid for his helpful advice and to the City of Vienna's Cultural Department for funding the project.

A satinized acrylic glass plate serves as an image carrier for twelve dials with spring steel hands and copper falling leaves. The hands are moved by means of sprockets and a chain driven by an electric motor at a speed of 0.5 revolutions per minute.

The mechanism of the falling leaf was modeled on analog chess clocks. However, here the thin hand bends, so that it takes longer for the falling leaf to fall back into its original position. This delays the passing of the time limit and draws attention to the subjective perception of time.
As the falling leaf also marks the passing of the twelve, it also illustrates a constantly repeating countdown, which can also be seen as a metaphor for the transience of life.

The decelerated movement of the hand and the observation of the falling leaves also has a contemplative aspect reminiscent of Duchamp‘s bicycle wheel:
„To set the wheel turning was very soothing, very comforting, a sort of opening of avenues on other things than material life of every day. I liked the idea of having a bicycle wheel in my studio. I enjoyed looking at it, just as I enjoyed looking at the flames dancing in a fireplace.“ [Marcel Duchamp, quoted in Schwarz, Arturo: The Complete Works of Marcel Duchamp. p. 588.]

A black MDF panel serves as an image carrier for twelve dials with 3D printed white hands and red falling leaves. The hands are moved by means of sprockets and a chain, which are driven by an electric motor at a speed of 0.5 revolutions per minute.
The idea for this work was inspired by Thomas Edlinger‘s text „Gedehnter Spuk“, in which our present is described, among other things, as a time of endless crisis.

On the one hand, the appearance of this wall object with its falling leaves is reminiscent of analog chess clocks as used in classic chess games in guillotine mode.

On the other hand, the shape of the hands and the line thickness of the dials in white on black are reminiscent of old speedometers. In terms of content, this contrast between the slowness of the game of chess (at least in classical time controls) and the association with the speed and acceleration of a vehicle is particularly noticeable. Perhaps this contrast therefore conveys a feeling of stepping on the gas pedal despite the handbrake being on - basically like a quiet burnout without the smoke and smell. Many thanks to Jakob Scheid for his helpful advice and to the City of Vienna's Cultural Department for funding the project.

	Color Space Object (634nm), 2019/2024

The color space objects "634nm" and "452nm" each consist of a body made of coated gypsum fiberboard and a lacquered MDF board respectively. Inside there is a concave curved HDF panel and two side panels painted in monochrome with pigments in matt dispersion.

This work was inspired by James Turrell's light installations. In contrast to his architectural approach, however, this work attempts to implement a color field as a minimalist wall object. One of the main challenges was to illuminate a hollow space as evenly and indirectly as possible while keeping the depth of the image to a minimum. The formal design is also based on this objective (e.g. the maximum height of the opening, the lateral fade-outs or the concave curvature of the painted surface).

In order to achieve the most intense color effect possible, high-quality pigments and LEDs with excellent color rendering values were used. As a result, this work offers the possibility of perceiving a color field with wavelengths of the color spectrum that cannot be displayed even with the best monitors.

The measured color spectrum is therefore clearly outside the color space coverage of monitors (the wavelength of primary red is 612nm in the AdobeRGB color space and 615nm in the DCI-P3 color space. See https://clarkvision.com/articles/color-spaces/).

	Color Space Object (452nm), 2019/2024

The color space objects "452nm" and "634nm" each consist of a body made of coated gypsum fiberboard and a lacquered MDF board respectively.

The measured color spectrum is therefore clearly outside the color space coverage of monitors (the wavelength of primary blue is 465nm in both the AdobeRGB color space and the DCI-P3 color space.
