A black MDF panel serves as an image carrier for twelve dials with 3D printed white hands and red falling leaves. The hands are moved by means of sprockets and a chain, which are driven by an electric motor at a speed of 0.5 revolutions per minute.
The idea for this work was inspired by Thomas Edlinger‘s text „Gedehnter Spuk“, in which our present is described, among other things, as a time of endless crisis.
On the one hand, the appearance of this wall object with its falling leaves is reminiscent of analog chess clocks as used in classic chess games in guillotine mode.

On the one hand, the appearance of this wall object with its falling leaves is reminiscent of analog chess clocks as used in classic chess games in guillotine mode.
On the other hand, the shape of the hands and the line thickness of the dials in white on black are reminiscent of old speedometers. In terms of content, this contrast between the slowness of the game of chess (at least in classical time controls) and the association with the speed and acceleration of a vehicle is particularly noticeable. Perhaps this contrast therefore conveys a feeling of stepping on the gas pedal despite the handbrake being on - basically like a quiet burnout without the smoke and smell.
